The Rev3 Full Distance triathlon at Cedar Point was set as the FIRST Full Distance Triathlon for Jeff Clifton and Nick Tranbarger and the seventh Iron Distance triathlon for Coach Todd. The weather on Saturday was stormy, windy and rainy, but by late afternoon only the wind remained and pre race preparations were in full swing. Once the bikes were dropped off all that was left was the pre-race dinner and a good night sleep. In an attempt to keep things as normal as possible, Coach Todd had Papa John’s Pizza as his pre-race meal. Race morning brought calm waters and slight breezes and excellent racing conditions.
Jeff Clifton finished his first Full Distance Triathlon with a swim time of 1:25:55, a bike time of 6:24:51, a run time of 5:12:59, and a Total Time of 13:17:32, GREAT JOB JEFF!!!
Nick Tranbarger completed his first Full Distance Triathlon despite a couple of flat tires and about an hour delay with a swim time of 1:12:02, a bike time of 6:27:16, a run time of 3:48:59, and an overall time of 11:38:17. Even though this was a disappointing race for Nick, it just gives him a burning fire in his belly to do better next time…..Go Get it Nick!!!
As the gun went off, Coach Todd positioned himself in the front of the pack of swimmers for the first of two triangular loops. As he completed the first loop he found a drafting partner and hung on for the second loop and finished the swim with a respectable time of 1:03:45.
After a quick transition, almost running past his bike, Coach Todd made his way out on to the two loop bike course that was mostly flat with some rolling hills and a tough headwind for the last 30 miles on the way back to Cedar Point. Coach Todd rode a solid time of 5:20:55 an average of 20.9 miles per hour and put himself in a great position heading out on to the run.
Once on the run, Coach Todd started to put together a strong run on the first few segments in the 8:20 per mile range. Coach Todd finished the first 13.1 miles in 1:46:38. This was a solid effort and an awesome finish time awaited Coach Todd if he could hold this effort for the next 13.1 miles. Coach Todd followed up his first lap effort with a strong second half finish of 1:51:54. This was an average of about 8:33 per mile.
The 3:38 marathon (8:32 per mile average) run by Coach Todd was better then he imagined and his overall finish time of 10:07:21 was good enough for 1st in the 45 to 49 age group and 34th overall. This was an outstanding race for Coach Todd.
