August 11th saw a cool crisp 65 degree morning with a can you believe it…wetsuit legal swim at the Muncie August Triathlon.  The water temperature was rumored to be 75 and it was a much welcomed chance to have a wetsuit swim.  Tri Tornadoes team members Heather Simpson, Jeff Clifton, Lara Krebs, Justin Tyminski and Coach Todd Shellenberger were in attendance at the most temperature friendly race this season.  The cool temperatures brought a tough headwind on the bike course and a cooling breeze on the run.  Heather competed in the SPRINT distance race and the other team members took on the OLYMPIC distance race.

The race started with the elite wave going off first.  Coach Todd took off on the swim and finished with a respectable 21:28 putting him in first place going out onto the bike.  The bike course has rolling hills and today a pretty good headwind on the second half of the loop.  After the days 3rd best bike split of 1:07:26 (22.8 mph), Coach Todd found himself in a race out of transition for the lead of the race.  The speedy John Behme beat Coach Todd onto the run course and took control of the race lead.  Coach Todd finished with the days 5th fastest run split of 42:08 (6:48 per Mile) and a 3rd place overall finish.

Lara Krebs finished 23rd overall, 3rd Women and 2nd in her age group with a time of 2:47:38.  She averaged 18.8 on the bike! Justin Tynminski finished 16th overall and 4th in his age group with a time of 2:39:45.  He averaged 20.3 on the bike!  Jeff Clifton finished 18th overall and 5th in his age group with a time of 2:40:36.  He averaged 19.6 on the bike!  Heather Simpson completed the SPRINT Triathlon in 59th place overall and 6th in her age group.  She averaged 18.7 on the bike!

Great Job by the Tri Tornadoes at the August Muncie Triathlon.
